Florida is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a plethora of breathtaking waters to explore. One fantastic way to immerse yourself in the state's natural beauty is kayaking. Whether you're venturing into the calm waters of Florida's rivers, lakes, or coastal areas, embarking on your first kayaking adventure can be an exhilarating and memorable experience. To help make your first-time kayaking experience in Florida a success, we want to provide you with some essential tips, including what to wear, what to bring, how to paddle, and how to stay safe on the water.

What to Wear:

When it comes to dressing for kayaking in Florida, comfort and practicality should be your primary concerns.

Clothing: Opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking materials that dry quickly, such as nylon or polyester. Avoid wearing cotton as it retains moisture and can leave you feeling cold and uncomfortable. Choose clothes that provide sun protection, like long-sleeved shirts and pants, or consider wearing a sun-protective rash guard. Don’t forget a swimsuit if you want to stop at a beach and go for a swim!

Footwear: Wear water shoes or sandals with straps to ensure they stay securely on your feet. Avoid flip-flops or bare feet, as they can be dangerous if you need to navigate through rocky or uneven terrain. Never wear shoes that you don’t want to get wet, because they will get wet.

Sun Protection: Don't forget to wear a hat or a cap to shield your face from the sun's harmful rays. Apply sunscreen generously to exposed skin, even if it's a cloudy day.

What to Bring:

To ensure a pleasant and hassle-free kayaking experience, it's crucial to pack the right essentials. Here are a few items you should bring along:

Personal Flotation Device (PFD): Always wear a PFD or a life jacket while kayaking. If you are renting a kayak, the outfitters will supply a life jacket for you.

Water and Snacks: Stay hydrated throughout your trip by bringing an adequate amount of water. Pack energy bars or light snacks if you are planning on a longer excursion.

Waterproof Bag: Store your belongings, such as your phone, keys, and wallet, in a waterproof bag or container to keep them safe from water damage.

Navigation Tools: Carry a map or use a GPS device to help you navigate unfamiliar waters.

Change of Clothes: There is a good chance that your clothes will get wet while paddling, so always bring a change of clothes so you can continue your day’s adventures in dry clothes.

How to Paddle:

Paddling a kayak is pretty easy, but having the proper form will help you cut through the water smoothly and more efficiently.

Holding the paddle: Grasp the paddle with both hands, shoulder-width apart, and make sure the concave side of the paddle faces you.

Paddling:  Reach forward, immerse the blade of the paddle fully in the water, and pull it back against the water with a smooth, even stroke. Move your paddle to the other side of the kayak and repeat.

If you find the front of your kayak is veering the wrong direction, paddle repeatedly on the opposite side of where you want the nose of your kayak to go until you have righted your course. You can also stroke backwards by pushing the paddle blade away from the kayak to turn yourself.

Safety:

Always Check the Weather:  Nothing can turn a safe and relaxing kayaking adventure into a dangerous and stressful situation like getting out on the water in bad weather!

Stay Hydrated: Florida's hot climate can lead to dehydration. Drink water regularly and avoid paddling during the hottest parts of the day.

Be Aware of Wildlife: Florida is home to diverse wildlife, including alligators and manatees. Keep a safe distance from these creatures and respect their habitat.

Notify Others: Inform someone of your kayaking plans, including your intended route and estimated return time.

Kayaking in Florida is an amazing adventure that will let you connect with nature and see the state’s picturesque waterways from a new perspective. Now that you know the basics for your first kayaking adventure; grab a paddle and explore Florida’s beautiful scenery!
